Orphanage Background
Lilly
Orphanage Kindergarten was started in 2000 with an
object of providing free basic education to young orphans, the needy,
destitute and street kids most especially those her vicinity. The
charitable organization was started as a small institution by Miss.
Namwanje Priscilla (photo on left). Miss. Namwanje
is a grade III teacher with 15 years experience in the field of early
childhood administration and career guidance.
After a close feasibility study
within Lungujja and her neighborhood, Miss. Namwanje Priscilla came up
with an idea of starting up an Orphanage and Lilly Orphanage
Kindergarten is the name. Priscilla found out that many school age going
children in Lungujja –Kikandwa especially orphans lacked assistance
and access to education and other aspects in life. This has greatly
occurred where the fathers have been reported dead; the relatives and
widows have in most cases failed to provide for the children
particularly as regards education. Consequently,
Priscilla thought it wise to establish an institution that could aid in
the provision of orphan services in the area.
Lilly Orphanage Kindergarten has
grown to great success despite some ups and downs. It is located on
rented land and structures in Lungujja – Kikandwa in Lubaga division,
Lungujja Local council I approximately 6 kilometers west of Kampala
city off Wakaliga road along Kalema road opposite St. Steven’s church.
The Orphanage Kindergarten has 250 fully registered
children of which 130 are orphans and 120 non-orphans who attend classes
from Monday to Friday.. Of these 150 are girls and 100 are boys. Nursery
section covers a greater percentage of 30%. These are 75 children
compared to 175 pupils covering P1-P6. This is the level at which the
Orphanage presently operates however there is hope for expansion to
Primary 7 standard. Children who have been screened and found to be in a
very sorry state i.e. those who live in a distressing state are looked
after in a relatively well established home managed by Lilly Orphanage
Kindergarten. We so far have 20 children looked after under this
initiative. Due to limited finances, we
solemnly encourage children to stay with their relatives and it is from
here that they receive help. This helps the management do away with the
burden of providing shelter to these children in specifically
established homes.
We have in place 9 teaching staff and 4 non teaching staff who attend to
these children from 8:00am to 10:30pm Monday to Friday. This
period of time applies only to upper classes i.e. from Primary 3to
Primary 5. The remaining younger classes up to Primary 2 are only at
school for up to 1:00pm.
Lilly Orphanage Kindergarten (LOK)
is currently run on rented premises, which is very costly. Management
pays 1,200,000/= Ug shs. an equivalence of 666.67 US$ per annum. It is the
income generating projects undertaken by LOK and funds collected from
the non-orphans who pay for the services rendered to them that is used
to meet operating costs such as these.
The non-orphans registered with
LOK pay relatively a reasonable fee of 30,000/= an equivalence of 16.67
US$ per term of 3 months. This subsidizes to what is generated from income
generating projects undertaken by LOK. Lilly Orphanage Kindergarten is a
fully registered community based, non-religious, non-governmental
charitable organization Registration No. LUB 339. The charity offers her
services to both orphans and non-orphans irrespective sex, creed, colour,
race and tribe. Lilly Orphanage Kindergarten works to promote the rights
of children most especially orphans in the country Uganda.
