Achievements and Setbacks

Orphans are at the heart of LOK’S work plan. Our plan and target is to have every orphan sponsored nationwide.  Because for every child sponsored, another 10 people in that community benefit.  When we begin working with the orphans, the first thing we do is to talk to them, find out their feelings, goals and needs in life. It could be access to better education facilities i.e. a good school, scholastics or Medicare.  We start work immediately but there are no simple solutions. Whatever help and practical support you and we do provide, it is long lasting and will benefit that real child for the rest of his or her life.  Lilly Orphanage Kindergarten manages to acquire and provide School uniforms, scholastics, breakfast and in some cases lunch to these children.

We have so far managed to acquire 8 acres of land from a well-wisher who has already submitted a land title to us. We hope with a little help we might be able  to expand the orphanage, thus accommodating more children and improving on our services. LOK undertakes income generating projects to raise funds that aid in meeting her set objects.

We have also managed to provide some classroom furniture to a few classes.  In some classes seats are overcrowded so some children find themselves seated down on the ground.  In the photo shown above one girl is seen seated on top of the desk due to limited seats in this class.  She therefore obstructs those who are behind her thus acting as a hindrance to them.

Lilly Orphanage is currently running a manure making and pesticide production project located behind the school buildings as shown in the photo below.  Funds generated from this project are used to meet different needs as may arise like in meeting the staff salaries, water bills, breakfast and lunch for both the staff and children and allocating essential commodities for the orphans.  Products from this project have already reached the market in this country (Uganda), since most of our people are peasants farmers who grow crops both extensively and intensively for national and home consumption respectively.  We also sell our products to horticulturalists and city gardeners who need them badly.  We use local products, which are readily available at no cost.

This photo shows workers parking finished products in packaging bags ready for marketing.  This project faces a big problems because of lack of needed equipment e.g. wheelbarrows, gumboots, hoes, spades, garden forks, rakes, enough packaging bags, a van to transport raw materials and finished products to and from the project site respectively, etc.  In the background of the above photo, one sees white bags.  These contain finished products and in the foreground are excess products to be carried to the stores. These could have been packed in stipulated packaging bags but lack dictates.

While sustaining income-generating projects is important, our biggest challenge is providing for the kids.  As part of the overall education, we at Lilly Orphanage Kindergarten undertake Physical Education (P.E.).  This helps boost children’s mental, physical and social capabilities. This activity lags behind because of lack of sports wear. Children are seen using their school uniforms at the time of P.E.
